POSSIBLE PITFALLS

Caution

Beware of "constructive criticism"
and "admonishment".

These time-worn procedures
can have nasty side effects.

Aside from wasting classroom time
these procedures are likely
to cause the student
to halt trying.

A good alternative
is to re-instruct
rather than discuss
the student's shortcomings.

Let the student listen
to the tape
during another class period.

Don't hold up the class.

Sacrifice an hour
of another subject;
-----------------

NO EMBARRASSMENT ALLOWED

Speaking

AVOIDING EMBARRASSMENT
CAN BECOME
THE CHILD'S PRIMARY MOTIVE
FOR LIVING.

Embarrassment stops participation.

Student's participation
is essential to learning.

Why would any classroom
allow opportunities
for embarrassment????

Why do we refuse to speak up
on certain subjects?

Why don't we participate
in unfamiliar situations?

We are avoiding possible
opportunities
for embarrassment.

Why display your lack of skills?

If there is a chance
that you will be wrong,
why not keep your mouth shut?

How can you get around this?

Solutions

Teach a limited embarrassment
form of reading and speaking.

The Peterson Reading technique
imbeds partial familiarity
of the sounds in your mind.

One million words correctly
pronounced in 100 hours
provides some confidence
in a correct pronounciation.

Phrases assist the search
for meaning.

Phrases allow words
to be learned
in a limited context.

Accelerated Thinking 555
allows a student
to have memorable input
just before speaking and writing.

555 procedures enhance
students’ recallable memory.
---------------

TO STUDENTS
WHY DO IT THIS WAY?

A. Your time is at stake.

Strict Timing and Previews

Designed to solve
the worst problems in studying:
boredom,
time-consuming,
waste,
poor comprehension,
poor memory,
poor writing quality.

Q.
Previews too fast
for your mind?

A.
Impossible.

Your mind works
a million times faster.

Q.
Different?

A.
Yes,
and it takes a few hours
to get used to paying attention
and writing notes in phrases
rather than sentences.
--------------------

Poor pronunciation
is a very quick way to earn
discrimination from others.

Which do you want?

To learn correct pronunciation
of 10,000 new words
in four years,
or
100,000 new words
in each year?

Problem

When there is limited oral practice,
students have difficulty
speaking the correct sounds.

You need to build
your vocabulary base before
the new subjects and ideas
can become clearer.

Previews and Peterson Reading
solve a major problem.

    continuing high-rate input.
    ------------------------

    Peterson Reading inputs
    at the rate of
    10,000 to 12,000
    words per hour.

    4,000 to 5000
    phrases per hour.

    500 hours of input
    equals 5 million words
    equals 2 million phrases.

    MAJOR PROBLEM

    Q.
    Why do so many persons
    claim that the brain
    learns more slowly
    after the first few months
    or age two?

    A.
    THE RATE OF
    ORAL INPUT SLOWS

    Here are some
    possible reasons why:

    1.
    Child becomes
    less dependent on parent.

    2.
    Child learns
    to crawl and walk away.

    3.
    Parents reduce
    the time they
    hold the child.

    4.
    Child has less contact
    with parents and phrases.

    5.
    Parent returns
    to older children.

    6.
    Parent may have
    another baby.

    7.
    Parent returns to work.

    Any of the above
    can make
    the learning rate
    drop precipitously.
